This page deals with the problem of working out how old your newly aquired radio may be. I will give you some hints and tips to look out for to make a pretty accurate guess.
HOW DATE A RADIO

.THE DIAL WILL TELL YOU A LOT,IF ITS A SMALL DIAL WITHOUT STATION MARKINGS OR FREQUENCY MARKINGS THE SET IS PROBABLY PRE 1936,WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS.

.IF THE DIAL IS A LARGE GLASS DIAL WITH SAY THREE WAVELENGTHS ON IT AND ALL THE RADIO STATION NAMES THEN ITS PROBABLY JUST BEFORE THE WAR OR PRE 1960.I KNOW THAT IS NOT MUCH HELP BUT EARLY RADIOS ARE QUITE UNMISTAKEABLE.

.LOOKING INSIDE THE SET IS FAR MORE HELPFUL,IF THE VALVES ARE OF THE GOLD OR SILVER METALLISED TYPE,WITH BRITISH 4 PIN,5 PIN AND SEVEN PIN THE SET IS MOST LIKELY PRE 1936-1937.THE RED MULLARD OCTAL VALVES CAME LATER ABOUT 1938 TO 1949 I THINK.AFTER THAT VALVES STARTED SHRINKING CONSIDERABLY WITH THE B8A SERIES(UL41,ECH42 ETC) COMING ABOUT 1947 TO 1951.B7G VALVES WERE MOSTLY USED IN THE MODERN BATTERY SETS LIKE THE EVER READY SKY QUEEN(DF91,DL96 ETC)AROUND 1949 TO 1956.B9A VALVES WERE THE LAST SERIES(EL84,UCH81 ETC) TO BE USED.THESE WERE IN USE FROM ABOUT 1952 TO 1970'S IN MASS PRODUCTION.

.LOOKING MORE CLOSELY AT THE ABOVE INFORMATION,YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THAT AS SETS GOT YOUNGER THE DIALS GOT BIGGER,THE OLDER THE SET THE SMALLER THE DIAL.VALVES ON THE OTHER HAND DID THE OPPOSITE,THE OLDER THE SET THE BIGGER THE VALVES,THE YOUNGER THE SET THE SMALLER THE VALVES.WIERD AINT IT?

.LOOK FOR DATE STAMPS TOO.THESE WERE SOMETIMES PRINTED ON THE INSIDE OF THE CABINET BELIEVE IT OR NOT.ALSO ITS WORTH LOOKING AT THE SMOOTHING CAPACITOR SILVER CAN,AS OFTEN THE MANUFACTURER DATE STAMPED THESE BEFORE THEY WERE USED IN THE RADIO.OBVIOUSLY IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE THE "TRADER" SERVICE SHEET,THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE WILL BE ON THE SHEET.

.RADIOS WITH THE BBC LOGO ON THE TOP ARE DATED FROM THE 1920'S AND ARE HIGHLY COLLECTABLE AND QUITE EXPENSIVE TO BUY.THESE WERE BATTERY ONLY RADIOS WITH "BRIGHT EMITTER VALVES",HOWEVER THERE ARE ALSO CRYSTAL SETS WITH THE BBC LOGO ON TOO.IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THESE THEN I AM VERY ENVIOUS OF YOU AS THEY ARE WONDERFUL THINGS TO OWN.

.THE FIRST AC MAINS RADIO APPEARED ABOUT 1926 IF MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECTLY.I THINK IT WAS MADE BY THE GAMBRELL BROTHERS?PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG.

.MAINS ENERGISED SPEAKERS WERE USED FROM ABOUT 1932 TO 1948.

.BAKELITE RADIOS EXISTED FROM THE 1920'S RIGHT UP TO 1970,S

.PRE 1928 RADIOS TENDED TO HAVE NO INTEGRAL LOUDSPEAKER.
