This page deals with the different types of test equipment which you may need when you repair electronic equipment. Test equipment can be expensive, but recently the price of it all seems to be coming down. Good 10mhz scopes which are ideal for repairing radio sets have come down to less than 120 pounds etc. Treat your test equipment with respect.
MULTIMETERS....ANALOGUE

The AVO 8 is legendary its a good robust meter that has stood the test of time. I dont know of any other analogue meter that is as good as this one and if dont have one i suggest you get one soon. I picked this up for just 5 pounds at a car boot sale and it works perfectly!Analogue meters are great for checking transistors, capacitors and breaks in printed circuit boards. I prefer the use of an analogue meter in these circumstances because you can get a better understanding of a reading when a needle goes over rather than a slow acting L.C.D display.

MULTIMETERS....DIGITAL

These are good for checking voltages and resistors. They are very accurate some meters offer a whopping 20meg input impedance which will not alter your circuit operation if you apply the test probe like the avo could.this particular one was bought from Maplin, and offers a transistor checker, a capacitor checker, inductance checker, and of course all your usual refinements from a multimeter such as volts, ohms and amps. Both ac and dc. They usually have a buzzer too which you can use as a continuity checker for checking bulbs, fuses, breaks in pcb's,checking earthing points etc.

CAPACITOR CHECKER

Does exactly as it says on the tin...checks capacitors. Its handy for checking those electrolytic capacitors that might have gone low capacity or small value capacitors that might be open circuit. The avo meter wont be sensitive enough to be able to check the very small capacitors(below about 500pf) but this meter can. A useful addition to your test equipment collection.

AUDIO GENERATOR

This instrument is useful for checking the frequency response of an amplifier and/or speakers. It generates a pure sine wave from about 20hz up to about 30khz. You feed this into an audio amplifier and it will produce a tone of variable frequency through your loudspeakers.

AN AUDIO FREQUENCY GENERATOR

SIGNAL GENERATOR

This is used frequently in my workshop. It is used for aligning your i.f. and r.f. stages in your valve radios or transistor radios, usually variable from about 150khz up to say 120mhz. Acts like a mini radio transmitter by sending a weak carrier wave out which can be modulated by an internal 1khz tone. This item is essential for any radio workshop.

OSCILLOSCOPE

This is only a cheap one but still very useful. It is used for checking waveforms, such as audio frequency response, television line frequency pulses, sync pulses you can even check remote controls via a useful little adaptor. Television line output transformers can also be tested by a process called "ringing"useful and now affordable.

A SIMPLE SINGLE TRACE OSCILLOSCOPE

POWER SUPPLY

This is a dual supply which means it will provide you with up to 30v..twice or 30v on each channel, the power supply or psu for short is variable so you get 0 to 30v per channel at 3amps which is also variable to allow you to limit the current output. It also has an L.E.D readout for voltage and amps. You can also series or parallel the channels up to give you 0 to 30v 6amp(single output parallel) or 0 to 60v 3amp(single output series). Use this for powering up your heater supply on battery sets or mains radios. Also useful for experimenters who build their own projects.

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SOLDERING IRON

A temperature controlled soldering iron is useful for different soldering applications. You can do delicate work at a lower temperature,or higher temperature jobs such as fixing aerial sockets onto tuner units. You can obtain a variety of tips for the iron and a sponge is included for cleaning the iron tip. These are now cheap and affordable.

VALVE TESTER

A valve tester is a good investment if you have a lot of valves or do a lot of radio repair. the price of valve testers has shot up recently. they are essential for checking the emission of valves and other characteristics, the AVO VALVE CHARACTERISTIC METER MARK IV does just that.

AVO VALVE CHARACTERISTIC METER MARK IV

A cheaper option is to go for the Heathkit valve tester model IT-21. It is a good robust meter that checks emission only. The data comes with american valves only, but these can be cross referenced with a suitable book to include the English equivalents.
